Pickleball is a recreational game that was developed on Bainbridge Island, Washington. It's similar to tennis, except the players use plastic balls in place of tennis racquets. Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum invented the game in 1965. These fathers saw that their children weren't interested in traditional sports and sought out a new, more enjoyable activity. The fathers used a badminton court to create the game.

Pickleball was soon a popular pastime in the Pacific Northwest. Pickleball was played in all fifty states by 1990. It had already become a major national pastime by 2010. Today, over four million people play the game every year.

One of the first pickleball tournaments was held on the west coast, and the first national tournament was held in Arizona in 2009. By the end of the 1980s, it had been established that the USAPA was a legitimate organization, and the first Executive Director and President of the organization was Sid Williams. He served as president from 1984 through 1998. Frank Candelario was elected to succeed Williams. Both Williams and Candelario have a long history within the sports industry.
