Racquetball players will know the importance of a legal and safe court. A court should have proper enclosure, no obstructions, and a smooth, slip resistant floor that won't cause a player or spectator to trip. A standard racquetball court measures 40 feet in length, 20 feet wide, and twenty feet high. In racquetball, the standard attire is shorts, a racquet and a pair racquetball footwear.

Playing racquetball requires that you return the ball in its center. This allows you keep the ball moving fast. It also prevents the opposing player from getting the ball.

You also need to keep your opponent away from the center of the court. Your chances of scoring are easier if the court is in your favor. This can be done with several types of shots. Here are some of our most-used shots.

In a typical racquetball match there will be 15 points. Most of your time will be spent in the receiving area. You must serve from the receiving area. It is the line which separates the two ends of the court. The red lines are used to mark the areas for service and reception.

Your opponent will have to attempt to stop you. In the receiving area, he or she might need to hit the ball into the side wall. This type shot is however less effective. The ideal shot is to aim for the ball to go over the back wall of the court. This will reduce the distance between yourself and your opponent.


Similar to the above, if your opponent hits a shot towards the front wall, you might have to hit it into the sidewall. This shot is called the "high Z". The high Z hit is when the racquetball bounces up against the wall on the opposite side and spins.

Another defensive shot is called an "around the world" shot. This shot is hit at a high trajectory making it difficult for your opponent not to return the ball.

For a defensive shot, you can also hit the ball into the ceiling. Although it is not as accurate as the high Z shot above, this shot can be extremely difficult for your opponent. It is important to use a backhand for this type shot.

Before hitting the floor, it is important to bounce the ball once. A bouncing ball can be especially useful for high Z. After hitting the ball, it's time to hit it on the floor again.
